Sportscaster Marv Albert 56 pleads guilty to assault and battery after admitting he attacked a longtime lover in an Arlington hotel room. Sentencing set for Oct 24 with up to one year in jail and a 2500 dollar fine. NBC fires him hours later after the plea.
The Centre for the Study of Living Standards warns that Canadian per capita income may not return to 1989 levels by 2000, making the 1990s a weaker decade for income growth than the 1930s. After-inflation income fell 25.9 percent 1929 to 1933, then recovered, while 1990s declines persisted through 1996.
Alberta Auditor General Peter Valentine denounces privatization of CKUA and related services as wasteful and poorly overseen. He cites a private board mismanaging almost 6 million public funds and notes lack of accountability, amid broader concerns over contracting out and Treasury Branch loans. A 44-year-old Scarborough man escaped a fatal shooting when a daily planner in his breast pocket stopped a chest shot the morning of the attack. Police say a masked gunman fired four times, but only one slug hit the man, who was leaving his home.
Premier Ralph Klein warned Ottawa that Alberta's energy sector faces devastation if production is curtailed to meet international greenhouse gas targets. He plans a mid November meeting with Prime Minister Jean Chretien to push back on national targets, arguing the cuts would unfairly penalize Alberta and trigger enormous costs.
