Smugglers sentenced in multimillion drug plot

In Montreal, Quebec Superior Court Justice Jean-Guy Boilard sentenced Conrad Bouchard, 57, to 24 years and three accomplices to six to 19 years for smuggling 13 million dollars of cocaine from Peru. Boilard called the case especially repugnant for involving Bouchard’s son Denis, 33, in the operation. he noted Bouchard’s 1971 heroin plot earned him two life terms.

KKK to Hold Rally at Rumford Farm Site

Alberta wins gas price case in Manitoba ruling

The National Energy Board denied Manitoba's bid to force TransCanada to buy gas directly from producers. Manitoba would have cut prices for about 200,000 consumers by two thirds, but Ottawa rejected the plan after hearings. Premier Pawley condemned the ruling as unfair to small consumers while Premier Getty hailed it as positive for Alberta producers. Ken Orr of Western Gas Marketing called the decision consistent with their position.

Edmonton warden fired after prisoner escape and murders

Warden Sepp Tschierschwitz of Edmonton Institution is removed to a non-operational post after an inquiry into Daniel Gingras escape. Gingras, charged with first degree murder in the deaths of Wanda Woodward and Joseph Piquette, and Calvin Smoker face related charges including a Medicine Hat Safeway robbery. Gingras escaped during a day trip to West Edmonton Mall on June 29 and was recaptured August 21 near Grande Cache.

Canada Post to present offer amid union talks and protests

Canada Post will present an offer to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers after noon following Friday talks that showed little progress. Mulroney warns of tougher economy if trade deal fails

Prime Minister Brian Mulroney warned Canadians Friday that failure to salvage free trade talks with the United States could worsen the economy. He cited an Oct. 5 U.S. deadline and urged that time is running out as Congress contemplates protectionist measures. U S sinks Iranian mine ship as crew repatriated

The U S Navy destroyed the Iran Ajr after it was alleged to have laid mines in the Persian Gulf. All 26 surviving crew members and three bodies were handed to Iran in Oman, while Iraq claimed attacks on two ships off Iran. Iran demanded clarification and restitution.
