The presidium of the Supreme Soviet unanimously ratified the partial nuclear test-ban treaty. Pope Paul VI marks his birthday on Wednesday as he nears the scheduled reconvening of the ecumenical council. Edmonton's ex-mayor William Hawrelak, a 1959 royal commission whistleblower, announces a comeback bid for the mayoralty.
Mayor Ernest Newman will lead a delegation to Ottawa to protest the decision to cancel jet training at Penhold RCAF Station. The move followed an emergency Red Deer City Council and Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday.
A second bomb blast occurred in Birmingham hours after a two man presidential team arrived to aid racial unity. No casualties or disorder reported. The city has suffered over 40 bombings since World War II, centered in a middle income Black neighborhood far from the 16th Street Baptist Church where four girls were killed. None of the bombings have been solved.
Zelma Baron 34 of Brooks is charged with the capital murder of her common law husband James Buck Bond after he died from a neck wound at Brooks General Hospital. Baron was remanded without plea and awaits a hearing before Magistrate Ed Wade on October 2 at Brooks.
A group of United States grain traders camped in Ottawa awaiting Washington’s green light to negotiate with the Soviet Union. Burton Joseph of I S Joseph Inc says the move depends on others, not the traders. A Soviet embassy spokesman notes Borisov remains with the delegation that signed to buy Canadian wheat and flour, but no approach has been made yet.
The first shipload of Canadian wheat destined for Soviet Russia left Montreal as the 10,000-ton Russian freighter Sevastopol loaded 9,500 tons at a Montreal elevator and sailed down the St Lawrence River. The Leninogorsk and Polotsk prepared to load as bulk carriers gathered to move grain from the lakehead. Earlier this week the Newbrunswicker carried 27,546 tons through the Seaway, a potential record.
Medicine Hat today renews its bid to host a jet training program at Suffield after Ottawa cancels Penhold RCAF training. Chamber of Commerce president Wally Hayne will send a letter to the defence minister restating Suffield’s unmatched air space and favorable weather. Facilities linked to the Crown Village of Ralston support the plan, with the Suffield Experimental Station offering key research facilities.
Albert Dederer of Medicine Hat dies at 53 in Holy Cross Hospital Calgary on Sept 22. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm Pattison's Chapel, interment Hillside Cemetery. Survived by wife Freda, son Henry, daughters Joyce and Lorraine, parents, three sisters and three brothers. Born Winnipeg Sept 24 1910, later moved to Medicine Hat.
