Eyeleth residents, proud of their hockey heritage, plan to erect a towering 32 metre stick in downtown. The project, built free by the maker of NHL equipment, replaces an earlier idea for a giant puck that proved impractical to mold.
Alberta Premier Ralph Klein campaigns through Nova Scotia and Newfoundland urging John Savage and Clyde Wells to stick to deficit reduction plans. He touts 1996 97 deficit goals amid protests and rising popularity, while Savage faces wage cuts and tax increases in a tight political climate.

The eight year old Ashley Krestianson was found dead in heavy bush near a Saskatchewan ranch. A hunter located the remains and a dentist pathologist and anthropologist confirmed identity. Foul play is not suspected.
