Tax changes under fire draw crowd at farmers meeting

Pierre Poilievre, MP and opposition finance critic, warned that a proposed federal tax change could remove the lifetime capital gains exemption for family farm transfers, taxing internal family sales as dividends at about 45 percent. He argued it benefits large buyers and increases income sprinkling scrutiny, with implications for self employed professionals who run profits through a company and face higher taxes.

Ranchers see constructive meeting after Bindless fire at Suffield

Ranchers Jim and Carol Hern praised a Thursday meeting with CFB Suffield officials in Bindloss. They described the session as constructive and professional as relief efforts follow a fire on Sept. 11 that burned 220 sq km on base and 58 more off base, destroying a ranch home and causing substantial losses. Approximately 160 head of cattle died, 16,000 acres of winter grazing were lost, and hay bales consumed. A Board of Inquiry and multiple investigative teams will pursue accountability while compensation claims are being prepared.
