A German submarine torpedoed an evacuee liner carrying 293 passengers including 83 children from Great Britain to Canada. Only 113 aboard of 406 survived, after a swift sinking near dawn. Survivors described a harrowing night at sea as a British warship raced to rescue those in lifeboats.

The Picatinny arsenal in Dover New Jersey reported two deaths and six injuries after an explosion while workers disassembled old fuse shells. Col. A S Buyers said the job was dangerous and a military board began an immediate investigation.

The Dagens Nyheter, in Oslo, said British planes bombed Trondheim and the Norwegian coast up to Namsos last Saturday. One plane was shot down, two force landed in Sweden with crews interned, possibly the same squadron. Norwegian police also detained workers for sabotage of products sold to Germany or German troops.
