Packers Announce Wage Increases Across Major Firms
TORONTO CP Agreements providing general wage increases of up to 11 cents an hour were signed today between Canada's big three meat packers and the United Packinghouse Workers of America. The deals cover 10,000 workers across eight Burns and Canada Packers plants, seven Swift Canadian plants, and seven Burns and Swift facilities. The wage gains total about 15 cents in year one and exceed 20 cents by Aug. 1, 1952, with cost of living adjustments, improved vacations and welfare plans, a shorter work week, and stronger union security. An 8 cent initial raise is retroactive to Aug. 1 and a 3 cent automatic increase will occur next Aug. 1. The work week will drop to 40-42 hours depending on the company. Dowling notes the COLA formula mirrors a GM-UAW agreement, aiming to shield living standards amid rising prices.
