Prime Minister Brian Mulroney praised Lester B Pearson in the Commons saying his peace and governance philosophy has guided Canadian prime ministers from Macdonald to the current leader. He noted Macdonald was buried before Pearson’s birth.
Ottawa and provincial officials outline a multibillion dollar ten year program to revive the economy. Spending would total at least 25 billion with 1.5 billion from Ottawa and 1 billion from provinces yearly for highway upgrades air ports and a fixed link between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The bulk about 19 billion funds upgrading the national highway system and 6 billion for airport runway repairs and the cross province link.
A fatal explosion at the Giant Yellowknife mine in Yellowknife kills nine workers at the 750 foot level. Violence erupts near CASAW Local 4 offices with injuries to two women as replacement workers clash with union members. Police investigate whether a safety violation or planted explosive caused the blast.
Paris voters face a decision on whether to ratify the Maastricht Treaty uniting 12 EC members. Premier Beregovoy backs ratification while opponents warn of currency turmoil and a loss of monetary control. France, Denmark, Ireland, Greece and Luxembourg have varied positions amid a tense pre referendum atmosphere.
Reform Leader Preston Manning challenges Prime Minister Mulroney to a televised debate on the Aug. 28 constitutional deal. He speaks to about 300 supporters in Calgary as his campaign funds a cross country tour and new referendum committee to push a No vote on Oct. 26. He claims the package is no settlement and would intensify constitutional wrangling and costs while failing to solve Quebec separatism.
