Ottawa Canada. Resources Minister Laing announced a national parks policy to keep parks pristine and free from mineral or resource development. The plan aims to maximize long term recreational benefits and maintains parks as sanctuaries. Possible land exchange with Alberta for Wood Buffalo resources is not allowed within park policy.
U S destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin opened fire on what were believed to be Communist PT boats though no craft were seen. North Vietnamese and Communist China agency reports claimed explosions and aircraft near Nghe An, while Hanoi denied provoking the incident.
North Viet Nam's army high command calls for an immediate International Control Commission session to discuss U S reports of North Vietnamese attacks on American warships in the Tonkin Gulf Friday night. Col Ha van Lau sent the urgent message to ICC chairman.
Alderman Cliff Adam announced he will seek a new term in the Oct. 14 aldermanic election. He said he planned to retire but will rearrange his schedule to continue civic service and thanked voters for their support. Also filing today were Alderman T. R. Osborne and others including Jack Cocks Mrs Norma DeMan Jack Edwards and Earl Smith.
Four Star dispatchers were ambushed by men with clubs and a bat as they entered a subway parking lot. The incident followed a broader strike by Local 91 printers against The Star The Telegram and The Globe and Mail.
At a Friday meeting few residents attended yet tensions ran high as 24 ratepayers nominated Jake Weisbeck, a retired farmer, and Jack Kinahan, a Medicine Hat drive-in owner, to run for the Separate School Board. Weisbeck has 22 years in the city and previously served as secretary for Fox Valley school. Kinahan stated he lacks board experience but brings business sense and aims to ensure prudent spending. United Auto Workers set to bargain for a new GM pact led by a pension focused contract. Delegates balk at immediate merger while weighing a bargaining bloc over 120 000 members and national policy themes.
Pharmacist C J Meagher won the Progressive Conservative federal nomination in Medicine Hat on the first ballot at the Assiniboia Hotel, defeating Paul Bartlett Dale Clifton and Jack Oldham. Meagher, born 1931 in Delisle, Sask, proposed by Leslie Cluff, is poised to face H A Olson in the next election.
Alvin Hamilton, former Progressive Conservative agriculture minister, told a Tory convention at the Assiniboia Hotel that Liberals and their allies must be removed. He labeled Medicine Hat MP H A Olson a Liberal, praised market expansion for grain, and forecast continued prosperity for Goodyear and local potash developments while urging broader world trade and better information on frozen meat shipments. He paid tribute to former Brooks MP E W Brunsden, saying western MPs served well in the House from day one.
The Daily Express reports the Queen remains determined to visit Canada despite threats. Cyril Aynsley quotes her as saying she looks forward to the trip and would take Prime Minister Lester Pearson's advice with bad grace if he opposed it.
