Twenty four British barrage balloons broke loose during a gale and disrupted railway and electric power services in Sweden and Denmark. Swedish air corps and anti aircraft guns with home guard units were deployed to shoot the balloons down.
In London and across Britain RAF pilots fought a major air battle as German raids swarmed in. The air ministry said 42 enemy planes were destroyed, nine British fighters were lost with five crew safe, and the hundredth alert was sounded as coastal fortifications and harbor targets bore the attack.
The second flotilla of over-age United States destroyers arrived at East Coast Canadian port today. They are part of 50 warships being turned over to Britain in return for permission to establish U S naval and air bases in British possessions in the western hemisphere. They will be taken over immediately by the Royal Navy.
London reports a British trial of a new aircraft defense method proving effective in protecting small vital areas. Details are secret though it is not a gun or ray and unrelated to balloons. If developed it could bolster national defenses and is inexpensive to manufacture and operate with few personnel.
Aircraftsman Gerald Murphy, 24, of Winnipeg died instantly when the Tiger Moth crashed near Balmoral Manitoba. AC Bill King, 23, Dauphin, was seriously injured with a fractured leg. Both were RCAP No 2 Training Command crew members in Winnipeg and had joined three weeks earlier. Weather was reported perfect. Witnesses saw the aircraft enter a tailspin about 2,000 feet up.
City utilities chief H O Davis says only the first utility phase is complete at Training School No 12 site. Ditch work for the water main progresses with hydrants planned for fire protection. Eight inch pipe will run about 2000 feet near the cemetery. town water max 170 gallons per minute.
Jimmy Gray 21, of Medicine Hat, and A N Nicholl 32 of Calgary were on a 90 foot scaffold around Hanna water tower when it collapsed in a wind at 2 pm. Gray died instantly. Nicholl was critically injured. Officials say accidental, no inquest. Both men employed by Dominion Bridge Co. Funeral arrangements are with Pattison Funeral Home.
Ottawa report states Hon. J. G. Gardiner will remain minister of Agriculture alongside his role in the National War Services department. Prime Minister Mackenzie King said no new appointment is planned, noting agricultural issues align with war services work. Gardiner has overseen national registration and conscription efforts and will help coordinate food production and distribution with foreign governments. He serves on the cabinet wheat committee advising on Western Canada grain financing amid crowded elevators.

Ottawa reports cash subscriptions to Canada second war loan reached 272 million dollars after a heavy day of orders. Private investors drove higher dealer activity across districts with many using chartered bank loaning arrangements. Notable entries include Francis Nolan of Rouleau and Salada Tea Co. of Toronto doubling its order. A Detroit buyer sought a US$100 war bond.
