Edmonton health board, acting on Dr. Jenkins recommendation, postpones the start of schools to September 30 after considering the possibility of more cases. The prior plan had set September 23 as the opening date.
London officials dismissed sensational talks of Anglo-Italian hostilities and said Mediterranean maneuvers are not an omen of war. Rome reports Mussolini expanding East Africa defense and preparing taxes and loans. Paris notes France may reject any League action dragging it toward conflict with Italy.
Lloydminster Sask Sept 18 A Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigation leads to Clifford Dingman Marsden facing a murder charge awaiting trial in Prince Albert jail. He was earlier charged with counselling an illegal operation after Emma Hein 16 died June 5. Exhumation and post mortem occurred Sept 4 with inquest adjourned to Sept 19.
Ellwood Higginbotham, a black defendant in a murder case, was seized from Lafayette County Jail by a mob and hanged as the jury deliberated. He was accused of killing Lyn Roberts, a white man, last May in Oxford.
The Prince of Wales receives treatment for a recurring ear condition in Vienna. Doctor Heinrich Neumann diagnosed a middle ear inflammation during a visit prompted by a past issue. The condition is not dangerous or painful, but further visits are planned as he continues holiday on the continent after arriving from Geneva.
Premier Bennett visited Medicine Hat yesterday during a train layover and spoke briefly to a large crowd. He rode in from the east at 5:50 p.m. and left on the Crow's Nest train to Lethbridge at 5 13 p.m. He was welcomed by Mayor Bullivant, local officials, and the Conservative association president. Bennett urged education for youth and thanked attendees, noting the responsibility for choosing future government lies with the crowd.
Delegates at the Alberta Medical Association convention voted to dissolve the provincial body and merge with the national group. Alberta becomes the first province to join the Canadian Medical Association, with Dr. D. S. McNab of Calgary named first president of the new Alberta division. The provincial 28 year old association, formed in March 1906, ends.
Governor O J Allen said there would be no appointment to Huey Long’s Senate seat. A special election would be held to align with the January primaries and quadrennial voting, with Long heirs expected to claim offices in one day. Reverend Hugh Jack of Red Deer has received a call from Weyburn, Saskatchewan.
Middleburg Sept 18. DD F Malan, opposition leader in the Union of South Africa parliament, called for reform of the League of Nations. He urged South Africa to exercise its right of neutrality in the matter.
Prime Minister R. B. Bennett urged Canadians to pursue constructive constitutional reforms to achieve economic and social changes. He said constitutional amendments must be settled with consultation between Dominion and provincial authorities during a Calgary luncheon by service clubs.
Premier William Aberhart, leader of Alberta's Social Credit government, said eastern Canada no longer sees his group as radicals. He discussed dividend payments with bankers, noting no definite decisions yet and that a friendly reception urged submission of detailed plans.
Warsaw reports five of the 13 balloons starting Sunday in the Gordon Bennett race have landed. The U S Navy bag and craft from France Germany Belgium and Switzerland reported down with the Kosciuszko leading a record flight.
