Vandals damage downtown bird bath at Batus Park

A bird bath donated by the Medicine Hat War Brides to Batus Park on Second Street and Sixth Avenue was found knocked over. Esme Crowther, secretary treasurer, noted 21 members aged 75 and over contributed two dollars each to the $500 gift. City officer Keith Crush observed the damage.

Extra Mounties headed west

Canadian Press reports Calgary RCMP officers graduated in Regina and travel west to Alberta though no local detachments will.receive new members. Budget boosts of 15 million last spring funded 100 extra Mounties and a separate 6 million paid for 60 investigators provincewide including 20 RCMP officers.

Strike hits Regina Salvation Army thrift store

More than a dozen employees at Regina's Salvation Army thrift store are on strike while others are locked out. The union cites job security and full-time positions as key issues. The Salvation Army says a flexible offer was refused. union indicates it would not boost full-time staff. About 80 percent of staff in Regina and in two Saskatoon stores are part-time.

Tentative deal reached for Regina paratransit drivers

After more than three months of talks, FirstBus Canada Ltd and the Amalgamated Transit Union reached a tentative contract for Regina paratransit drivers. Union members will vote on the proposal. buses will run at least until Monday. ATU President John McCormick expects 57 members to accept the offer.

Acting Edmonton chief faced perk probe claim

Edmonton's acting police chief and job finalist told the police commission in February that he had accepted a hockey game ticket from a photo radar company. The report notes the claim amid an investigation into officers accepting perks, with internal policy forbidding any gifts or perks to officers.

Diesel and fuel oils raise sediment health risk in New Orleans

The Associated Press reports new health concerns after Katrina with sediment samples from New Orleans showing diesel and fuel oils making up as much as 10 percent of weight in 18 samples taken Sept. 10. Five flood related oil spills have been recorded since August 29.
