Fire at CFB Suffield prompts Bindloss town meeting
More than 200 residents gather at Bindloss school to discuss the CFB Suffield fire that began Monday after an operation to dispose of an undetermined explosive. About 220 sq km on base and 58 sq km off base burned. 160 cattle lost, 20 euthanized, 120 cattle per rancher Ivan Schlacht. Loss estimated around $300,000 with 16 000 acres of winter grazing burned. Local officials say base fire breaks and mutual aid helped but base did not engage off base fires, raising trespass concerns for ranchers.
