Medicine Hat council approved sending a letter to the provincial government urging an indefinite extension of the Alberta Natural Gas Rebate Program, which is set to end March 31, 2009. Ald. Graham Kelly noted the benefit to households and the greenhouse sector, with rebates triggered when prices exceed 5.50 per GJ.
RCMP seek BC hunter over the weekend killing of a four month old puppy named Seymour, belonging to a 12 year old boy who survived brain cancer. Grandfather Chris Rose said Max Rose is devastated as investigators weigh firearms charges and monitor a suspect who may turn himself in. Police won’t name the man.
The Toronto stock market tumbled over 500 points as Wall Street slumped and oil dropped below 15 dollars a barrel. The drop deepened fears of a global recession, with the TSX down 18.7 percent from its June high and more than 350 billion in market value erased.
Shell Canada confirms temporary supply challenges across Alberta with several Medicine Hat outlets sold out since Friday. Some Calgary and Edmonton stations also affected while others maintain limited stock. Premium gas remains available at affected locations.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper urged Canadians not to panic as global markets fell after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy and Merrill Lynch agreed to be acquired. He noted the downturn, but said a crash was unlikely and pointed to cooling housing markets with a 3.4 percent August drop and a 19.3 percent year gain.
