The Electric Light committee recommends free wiring for verandah lights within city limits with the city supplying power. Individual houses would pay $6 for wiring, $5 for block wiring, and 60 watt minimum lamps. Residents may opt to group wires to share the cheaper rate.
Calgary on September 16 discussed Mayor Webster's Ottawa National Conference on Unemployment report. The council decided to cap relief at 34,000 for now and to urge both provincial and federal governments to adopt the conference’s relief-sharing plan. Mayor Webster will write to Minister James Murdock about steps to implement relief recommendations.
Calgary September 11. A. H. Tazell manager of the Hail Insurance Board of Alberta announced that the 1924 rate is set at 7 percent after a Tuesday meeting to align with the act. Last year the rate was 12 percent, and farmers using the municipal plan should welcome the cut this year.
Washingtoun reports Secretary of the Navy Wilbur has been summoned to Washington from California to stop efforts of a fiction that the Navy budget is being junked. The note accuses a proposed “funian” of trying to mislead the public about naval spending.
A Monterey blaze on September 16 caused massive property damage estimated between three and four million dollars. Two people were killed and two injured as flames breached a city tank and hose system, spreading into the bay.

St Johns Sept 16 A British officer Leon ant Reid son of the Interim Sir tm Reid faced murder charges after a deadly car wreck on Topsall Road early today. Victims include Lieut. Commander J B O Calaghan and Silent Burroughs from the warship Constance.
Canadian Pacific Railway crop report from Winnipeg dated Sept 15 cites continuing wet conditions delaying harvest. Wheat progress is limited across prairie provinces with heavy rains suspending harvesting in Manitoba while cutting is completed in the south. Coarse grains lag a few days behind. Livestock markets show slight price improvements and labor remains adequate. Saskatchewan shows rain retarding activity but favorable prospects for peas.
Miss E Cora Hind, Manitoba Free Press agricultural editor, reports crop estimates for three prairie provinces. Manitoba total 61,647,568 bushels average 21 bu. Saskatchewan 173,516,744 bushels with summer fallow and new breaking contributing 115,421,240 and an average 20 bu. Winnipeg reports rapid movement of grain toward market with railway capacity strained. New crop yields high grades with low rust damage and few off grades. Saskatchewan production estimated around 126 million bushels, up from 258 million last year. Export demand supports price gains of about two and a half cents as Alberta harvests begin and Vancouver handling remains limited.
News despatches from Shanghai and Kiangsu detail renewed attacks along the Yanktse near Shanghai and along the Nanking railway. Forces under Kiangsu and Chekiang fronts clash as bombardments and reinforcements surge. casualties mount while lines hold.
L R Wilson president of the Sarnia Oil & Gas Co said the community will back the capital for a new well. Drilling is now at 2470 feet with a 8 inch casing and the project hinges on public support to complete the well in about thirty days. Frank Stover will join next week with four experienced drillers.

Bow Island Sept 15 A fire completely destroyed Blaine Drug Store owned by Blaine Drug and Stationery Co after 11 pm alarm. Firemen confined flames to the source with help from CPR pressure. adjacent shops including a pool hall confectionery barber and Globe Stores building narrowly saved. Cause unknown and damage partially insured.
The first case of its kind in Medicine Hat, heard before Magistrate Ellis at the A P P court, involved vt M Page who pled guilty to issuing an unstamped receipt for $14 under the Special War Revenue Act. He was fined $3 and costs.
Premier King will address the Chamber of Commerce at Cecil Hotel on Friday October 31. Directors extended an invitation and his acceptance has been received. The monthly general meeting was postponed to accommodate the head of the government’s visit.
