Sulphur Fallout Might Boost Central Alberta Soils
A natural gas well near Lodgepole Alberta blew for 67 days last fall, depositing about 50 kilograms of sulphur per hectare over 140000 hectares. The study notes low level sulphur deposits come from gas plants and wells, possibly acting as fertilizer in sulphur deficient soils while raising concerns about ecosystems if deposits rise further. The well owned by Amoco Canada Petroleum Ltd emitted sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, with flames seen from 60 kilometres away and a strong odour over Edmonton and Calgary.
