In New York at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 13 Steve Belloise a 22 year old Bronx boxer with under two years in the ring outpointed Cefering Garcia over 10 rounds to earn a contendership shot at the world middleweight crown.
Belloise survives a bruising battle with Garcia to secure a November 1 title bout versus Overlin. Crowd of 10,869 boosts a $23,158 gate as Capstilloux dominates Debeilo in eight rounds. Castilloux, 138.5 pounds, defeats Debeilo in seven to move toward a winter title clash with Jenkins.
Ray Billows defeats titleholder Bud Ward four down after six holes, advancing to a 36 hole semifinal against William McCullough. McCullough beat Johnny Fischer and Turnesa to reach the semis. Other matches featured Wilford Wehrle and Dick Chapman posting low scores.
Deliveries Ltd. announces a singles competition draw for 16 ends with four woods each. Matches include Edwards against Chapman and Lockwood versus Ford among numerous pairings. Greens to be drawn before games. games to be arranged over the weekend at Legion screens 1-6.
Last night preliminaries saw Jeffries defeat Eamson and Weighell beat Richardson in the Nicholson Cup trials. Upcoming games include Gallacher versus Lockwood and Jeffries versus Milroy with semifinals matching the A and B winners then Weighell against Morriscen.
George Parnassus, manager of Ceferino Garcia, collapsed after his fighter lost a 10 round decision to Steve Belloise at Madison Square Garden. Reports said Parnassus had suffered a heart attack and was taken to hospital.
The Jones trophy for B class men will be played at Connaught Golf Club this Sunday September 15. It is a 18 hole handicap event with low net taking the Jones cup for a year and a runner up prize if feasible. Entry fee 25 cents and start before dark with the following draw listed. Access to the hockey school notes follow. Lester Patrick says Rangers hockey school opens October 3 in Winnipeg with training to start shortly after.
The National Hockey League and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association reach a one year tentative agreement. The N.H.L. will pay up to 500 dollars for signing an amateur, with 250 dollars more if the player joins a major league club. Season opens Nov. 2 with the New York Rangers at Toronto.
After a split doubleheader in Cleveland, the Yankees lost 6-3 to Detroit as Schoolboy Rowe earned his 14th win with 11 hits allowed. Cleveland crushed Boston 8-1 on Mel Harder's three-hit pitching and a 10-hit attack, widening their gap behind Detroit and entering a tight AL pennant race.
The American League teams Detroit Cleveland New York Boston and Chicago will attend the World Series meeting with Commissioner Landis. The series opens Wednesday October 2 after the season ends September 29. If Cincinnati wins the Reds would host games one and two at Crosley Field with subsequent games split between parks as needed.
Mimico Mountaineers rallied past the Hamilton Tigers 8-6 to sweep their best of three semi final and advance to face Brampton in Brampton. Brampton, ranked senior B, joins St Catharines Orillia and Mimico in the all Ontario bracket with victor to meet St Catharines for the title. Orillia was eliminated by St Catharines in the play downs.
Tonight events include ladies triples with Mrs. Cove versus Mrs. Pushie and men's doubles matchups such as T Weighell against McDougall and Baldwin against Court. Final mixed rinks at 7 15 feature AttvHl versus Hitchcox with listed rink personnel.
Cleveland’s teenage rookie Bob Feller struck out 17 Philadelphia Athletics four years ago today to tie Dizzy Dean’s major league strikeout record. He also surpassed the American League mark of 16 set by Rube Waddell in 1908.
A car and garage were badly damaged by fire at 2021 Fifteenth Ave Crescent View last evening around 8 30. The blaze started from a short circuit in or automobile owned by W Crar immer and fire crews arrived at 8 40. The garage and its contents were not insured. only the structure was saved.
