Terrorist attacks strike United States in coordinated airliner assault
Four hijacked commercial airliners struck New York and Washington in a coordinated assault. World Trade Center towers collapsed after two planes hit. A third plane hit the Pentagon and a fourth crashed near Pittsburgh. President Bush declared a national emergency and airports were closed nationwide. Government offices evacuated as casualties mounted and security agencies mobilized. Canadian Prime Minister Chretien condemned the acts.
