London endured a reconnaissance raid and a massive night assault as German planes bombed northern districts and hospitals. British forces answered with air strikes on Berlin targets while anti-aircraft batteries blunted the raid, hailed as a great victory.
British bombers struck German convoys off Dunkerque and Cape Gris Nez with other squadrons targeting barges docks and shipping in raids on German held territory. The Air Ministry reported one supply ship sunk off Dunkerque another hit and a third seriously damaged off Cape Gris Nez.
Premier Jan Smuts told the legislative assembly that opposition members who hostilely view Britain will face extraordinary war powers. A delayed action bomb, similar to the Buckingham Palace device, was discovered buried in the St Pauls Cathedral precincts in London. Workmen risked their lives removing it as police and engineers secured the area, and residents were warned to evacuate.

CRUSTA Morocco Sept 12 Three cruisers escorted by three destroyers flying the French flag headed for the Atlantic through the Straits of Gibraltar yesterday unmolested by British batteries at Gibraltar. The report suggests some Toulon fleet units may be joining Britain while a Milan dispatch claimed a British fleet sailed into the Mediterranean from Gibraltar and that several British cruisers had exited into the Atlantic.
Ottawa reports Canada’s second war loan surpassed the $200 million level with preliminary three day subscriptions at $201 919 000 and aims to reach $300 million. Finance Minister Istey urged broad small investor support while noting private gifts including a 1 000 900 submission by R S McLaughlin. The loan remains a direct appeal to fund arms and equipment for Canada’s armed forces.
