An extensive Southam News poll of 1,063 voters shows two thirds think Pierre Trudeau should step down as prime minister. It highlights Liberal troubles with only 46 percent likely to vote Liberal next time, while Mulroney leads among respondents.
Prime Minister Trudeau told hundreds of Liberal workers in Lac Delage Quebec that he is not a quitter as he opened a new Liberal offensive against Brian Mulroney. He recalled past Liberal battles against Stanfield and urged supporters not to fear the Conservatives. He appeared casual in a windbreaker and enjoyed corn with workers after a three day caucus meeting and attended a sailboat christening at Quebec City's old port.
NDP leader Ed Broadbent warned that with the last session before the next election he will force votes on economy medicare and other issues to pressure Brian Mulroney. He promised aggressive actions in and out of the House to prevent generic opposition and noted a party poll rebound from 16 to 20 percent while criticizing Liberals and Conservatives on unemployment and health funding.
About 1,000 police and volunteers comb a 320 kilometre Hokkaido coast for bodies and debris from the Korean Air Lines jetliner shot down by a Soviet fighter. 41 objects believed from the jet were recovered, with a child’s severed body found and sent for autopsy and analysis.
