McGwire Ties Maris With 61st Home Run

St Louis slugger Mark McGwire homered for the 61st time to tie Roger Maris as Babe Ruth’s 60 year old single season mark approach. The drive came in the first inning off Mike Morgan at Busch Stadium to cap a hot stretch of seven homers in seven games. The Cubs trail as Sammy Sosa watches from Chicago.

Brooks resident dies after crossing collision with train

Bertha Hill 74 of Brooks was killed when her southbound car on a gravel road west of Brooks was struck by a westbound train shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday. RCMP say she had just returned from a Baltic cruise six days earlier and lived an active life in the community. Her brother Louis Janko described her as outgoing and involved in Prairie Pioneers and card games. she was born in Lithuania and moved with her family across Canada before settling in Brooks.

Retired Toronto seamstress dies in Brooks crash

Hill a widowed retiree with three children and own sewing business died after a collision near Brooks. Const Lisa Ransky notes bright sun and impairment may have contributed. In the past month Brooks saw two more deaths at Cassils Road and the Trans-Canada Highway, including an 80 year old Vernon resident and a 68 year old Tilley man.

Scouts to go coed in Canada Scouts Canada to allow girls in all youth sections

The Boy Scouts of Canada plans to become Scouts Canada and admit girls to Beaver colonies Cub packs and Scout troops. The national council must approve the name change and coed policy in Ottawa this November with parliamentary support targeted by September 1999. The Girl Guides of Canada have no plans to allow boys.

Groom allegedly uses chainsaw at Kingston wedding

Ronald Girard, 41, faced five counts of assault threatening death and weapon possession after reportedly assaulting guests at a Kingston Ontario wedding before firing up a chainsaw and menacing attendees. He remained in custody.

Medicare funds move from blank cheques to report cards

Health Minister Allan Rock told CMA delegates in Southam Nev that the era of blank cheques for Medicare is over and a permanent report card will monitor health-care spending. The federal plan includes 2.2 million for a study on waiting lists while provinces decide on future transfers. Dr Iain Cleator urged more money for acute care and questioned the value of studies.

Air Canada and pilots resume talks to end strike

Air Canada and its striking pilots planned talks again in Toronto to end a walkout that disrupted travel for thousands. Jean-Marc Belanger said both sides would meet at 4 p.m. after flights remain cancelled until a union ratifies any agreement.
