Canada to heighten armed forces strength with NATO link

Nehru gloom ened after talks with Khrushchev

Indian Prime Minister Nehru left Moscow somber after two and a half hours of talks with Soviet Premier Khrushchev. He warned the world fears atomic tests and spoke of foul winds of war while urging peace and construction. Khrushchev urged neutrals to push for a German peace treaty and Western powers to accept nonprejudicial disarmament steps.

Kingston Ontario pilot Jim Roe 26 died in Toronto hospital from burns suffered when he crash landed a burning Otter plane in Greenland two weeks earlier. Co pilot Harris Robinson survived partial burns and passengers escaped as the aircraft burned after landing on a lake near Sonderstrom. Roe’s selfless actions during the fire saved his passengers.

Reds Use Tear Gas On Crowds

East German police used tear gas firecrackers and water cannon against West Berlin demonstrators near the border. Villagers Flee Before Flames in Newfoundland Fire

A wind driven forest fire near Fortune Bay evacuated hundreds from Terrenceville and Grand LePierre Newfoundland. Evacuees were ferried by boat to Bay L Argent and later moved by road to nearby towns as smoke and spreading flames forced departures. The fire threatened Terrenceville and cut the village road exit.

Moose Jaw Man Killed In Oregon Car Crash

Maurice Blake O'Connor 72 of Moose Jaw Sask died from head injuries after his car left Highway 99W near McMinnville Oregon. The elder Canadian was alone, the vehicle rolled at least once and he was found 40 feet from the wreckage. Police believe he was returning from a trip to California as Oregon's annual traffic toll rose to 318 with thirteen deaths this month.

Riots Shake UN Efforts in Katanga Congo

Rioters in Elisabethville attacked UN forces and a Canadian captain as protests swelled against UN plans to place Katanga under Leopoldville authority. The mob overturned a UN car, damaged a hospital and the Leopold II hotel, while police moved in to disperse the crowd. Captain Mario Cote reportedly faced the assault with improvised defense. No casualties reported after the second day of clashes.
