Canadian Press tally from Labor Day weekend shows 55 highway deaths in Canada among 80 total fatalities, with 14 drownings and 12 other deaths. Ontario recorded 26 deaths, Alberta worst accident with six, Manitoba 11 violent deaths, and several regional totals across provinces.
RCMP detachment from Saskatchewan held John Petlock 35 for murder charges after a high profile manhunt. He surrendered Monday in downtown Edmonton as detectives seized more than 11 000 in cash, part of a stash missing from a homestead where five relatives were slain on August 29.
The Edmonton weather bulletin says skies will be sunny on Wednesday across the Western Prairies with lower temperatures. Highs and lows not specified, but the sun returns after a warmer period. Wind remains light, clearing conditions favor outdoor plans.
Col Horace A. Hanes in an F-100C over Edwards AFB set a record speed of 822.135 mph in two high altitude runs on August 20, surpassing the 755 mph mark. The runs reached 870.627 mph and 773.644 mph, the first time a speed faster than sound was recorded in an official test.
American motorists produced a Labor Day weekend toll near a record with 414 traffic deaths from Friday evening to Monday midnight. Drownings reached 79 and 85 other violent deaths occurred for a total of 578, below the all-time toll of 658 set in 1951. The National Safety Council had foreseen 400 traffic deaths.
Twenty seven people died in western Canada during Labor Day weekend in traffic and other mishaps. Alberta recorded eight highway deaths plus drownings and shootings, while British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan reported multiple fatalities. Notable incidents included a truck collision near Edmonton killing six and drownings in Merritt and Vegreville areas.

Canada dairy leaders at the National Dairy Council convention say government subsidies are the only way to lower butter prices while facing high production costs. Producers and manufacturers back continued price supports and government relief to absorb losses, with talks on more efficient production and better consumer appeal for dairy products.
Mme H E Vautelet of Montreal told 300 industry leaders at the National Dairy Council meeting in Lake Louise that markets must be won and kept, warning dairy boards neglect consumer psychology and creating resistance by actions on margarine, butter stockpiling, and price protection.
The general synod of the Anglican Church of Canada almost unanimously approved establishing a fixed primatial see near Ottawa. A commission will study upper house recommendations, consult diocesan and provincial authorities, and report to the executive council and next synod for action. The plan creates a new diocese and reorganizes others, with a new ecclesiastical province covering Arctic, Moosonee, Keewatin, and Yukon. The primate would preside as metropolitan.
The Anglican Church of Canada calls on college and university authorities to give religion its rightful place in higher learning curricula. Rev. S. H. Prince of Halifax says church ministry among 9,000 Anglican students is weak and improvement requires religion to have full academic standing in universities.
Chief Little Dog of the Blood Indian Reserve at Cardston will present scrolls to 58 pioneers who arrived before 1891 and 600 more to Alberta oldtimers from 1905 or earlier during Medicine Hat Jubilee Night at the new senior high school auditorium. Senator Gershaw will speak, Librarian Block will deliver an eulogy, and officials will hand out scrolls to pioneers and oldtimers amid music and candles.
Edmonton CP report to the 19th Anglican Church of Canada session cites a failure of communication between clergy and laity hindering church work. Dr. G Owen urges a comprehensive educational program to involve all members and organizations in Christian education.
