A mixed message indicates partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures for the coming weekend. Saturday and Sunday will see bright spells with comfortable highs, while a light breeze keeps conditions mild across the region. Monday remains warm and largely dry with a slight increase in sunshine.
In Brattleboro Vermont a group of teens Alec McPherson Chris Carr Pat Schoewers and Adhi Palar protest a proposed anti nudity ordinance. The Vermont League of Cities and Towns notes eight towns have passed similar rules and Brattleboro weighs options after observing neighboring actions. The town studies what other communities have done to curb public nudity.
Beaumont Hospital said it is investigating how a dead man came to have another person’s heart and lungs placed in him after two autopsies. The 55 year old British tourist Louis Selo died Aug. 2 on a Dublin taxi ride from the airport. The hospital will consider disciplinary actions and review if any other organs were swapped in its morgue.
At Dunmore Road and Carry Drive a blue 1989 Oldsmobile was rear ended by a 2002 Ford Escape at 10:10 p.m. on Sept 3. The Oldsmobile passenger sustained minor neck injuries and was taken to Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. The Escape driver was charged with impaired driving refusing to provide a breathalyzer and driving dangerously. Court date set for October 26. Estimated vehicle damage about $10,000.
A vehicle parked near the Provincial Court Building on 4th Avenue Brooks was damaged daytime August 30 between 8 a.m. and 4 30 p.m. RCMP allege a large object was dropped or thrown at the roof causing substantial damage. Police seek tips from the Brooks RCMP detachment 362-5548 or Crime Stoppers 1 800 222 TIPS.
Edmonton CP reports Dan MacLennan, president of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, argues for automatic certification when more than half of workers sign a union card. He criticizes current voting safeguards as allowing misinformation or threats and plans a Monday campaign to reform Alberta labour laws.
Elvis James says his 15-year-old son Cooper will stay home as he appeals Calgary Board of Education rules barring service dogs in school. Cooper, who has Kodak the standard poodle from Lions Foundation of Canada, argues the policy may be unfair and a letter from the foundation is being presented to officials. The story also notes Burning Man's 40-foot wooden figure The Man burning in Gerlach Nevada as the festival closes.
ST JOHN'S Newfoundland a year round transatlantic service ends as Air Canada cancels St. John's to London Heathrow flights. The move spurs public anger with irate radio calls and a vitriolic letter from Mayor Andy Wells to CEO Montie Brewer. The loss affects tourism and Newfoundland heritage access as the province loses its only direct transatlantic route since World War II.
Australia mourns Steve Irwin known as the Crocodile Hunter after his heart was pierced by a stingray spine while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. The 44 year old, famed for leaping crocodiles and handling dangerous snakes, died doing what he loved. Prime Minister John Howard called it a huge loss to Australia.
