Canada Post proposes first class Canada rate up one cent to 37 cents and U S international mail up two cents to 74 cents. Parcel rates would rise on average 70 cents. The plan aims to generate 87 million dollars next year and seeks cabinet approval after public comment.
Ottawa reports three federal immigration officers suspended without pay as the Benoit Bouchard government probes alleged mail opening at a Toronto postal sorting plant. An RCMP inquiry will determine the outcome while the department also reviews unrelated improprieties.
Dome Petroleum Ltd. discloses a $1 million minimum payment to chairman Howard Macdonald, tied to stock options likely to expire worthless. The 59-year-old Scot joined Dome in 1983 after a Shell career, while the company faces $6.3 billion in debt and default. Range Grain Ltd denies involvement, while Saskatchewan Indians claim they brokered the sale through Eagle Staff Import Export. Canadian Wheat Board officials say such a sale is possible but cannot confirm direct Indian involvement.
