The September 5 1901 vote endorses municipal ownership of a natural gas plant in Medicine Hat with aims to drill wells and issue tenders by September 26. Council plans rapid installation under a gas expert, believing gas will boost revenue, reduce expenses, and transform Medicine Hat into a Northwest hub.
The Regina Leader discusses territorial expansion and the strain on public works for roads and bridges. It explains the local improvement law that forms small districts for resident taxation or labor, later extended to tax lands of landowners in sparse areas via large districts, and notes the program has produced substantial road work and questioned fairness.
The North West Government forces payment from Canadian Pacific and Hudson's Bay for local improvement district taxes totaling 46 000. Court cases since 1898 culminated in Regina ordering payment with 16 090 from CPR and 30 000 from Hudson's Bay to end of the year. Premier Haultain praised, while R B Bennett faced criticism over power.
Foreman Chas W. Williams plans to move his family from Chinook to Maple Creek NW Territory to establish a home as cattle range development expands north of Medicine Hat along the South Saskatchewan. The Price range venture in the big bend area has been experimental with mild winters recently and scant shelter due to the flat bare bench terrain and lack of streams.
River Press notes bleak country where few settlers reside and no sheep. If Mr Price’s cattle experiment succeeds, Assiniboia could attract range cattlemen despite a 20 percent Canadian tariff ad valorem. Alberta reserves range herds while Ontario and Manitoba stock is inferior. Texas companies seek outlets for young steers but tariff and reach hamper expansion.
