The University of Alberta have set up new bargaining procedures for 1500 academic staff. The process includes a defined negotiation period and binding arbitration by an independent mediator if no agreement is reached. It takes effect for the 1972-73 salary talks starting Oct. 1 and aims to avoid budgetary hardships from late negotiations.
The Associated Press reports a secret Paris meeting of 10 major non-Communist industrial nations began to sort out the chaotic monetary crisis. A 20 year old Cuban refugee tried to hijack a Eastern Airlines plane toward Cuba near Miami. Off duty crew and passengers overpowered him, injuring three crew with minor stab wounds. He was arrested and said his mother in Cuba was ill.

Police blame IRA gunmen. political leaders decry the killings as savage and sickening.
In Phoenix, seven people including four children aged 9 months to 10 years were shot to death in a home Friday night. Police arrested John Friedman, found fleeing an alley, after two gunshot wounds to his legs. He surrendered on orders, carrying two pistols and refusing to talk. Neighbors say Mrs Bentley’s husband previously worked for the suspect and that the suspect’s wife and two children vanished in February.
South Vietnam President Thieu withheld comment on Vice President Ky's threat to topple the government unless Thieu cancels the October one man presidential vote. Ky implied a coup could succeed if he believed it could. Ky’s aide denied the remarks while noting official denial protects Ky from arrest.
