Former News publisher Fred McGuinness is named a member of the Order of Canada. He helped launch rural issues coverage at Medicine Hat, Brandon Sun editor, created Neighbourly News column for prairie weeklies, and spent nearly 40 years promoting rural Western Canada before the 2004 award.
The city council backs a staff recommendation to proceed with a 2.2 million purchase from Enterra Energy Corp Calgary based divesting 20 sections of land and 40 shallow gas wells plus a small compressor station. The gas utility division projects another 4.33 billion cubic feet per day in output from the asset.
City approves tender for a 693 seat Esplanade venue with gallery and rehearsal space though the budget rises to 45 million from 27. Funding will come from provincial and federal programs plus fundraising and future museum sale. Key figures include Alderman Hamill opposing the higher cost and a sod turning planned for September week three.
Medicine Bennett Architect Inc has been awarded the design and project management tender for a new emergency services station in the city’s southwest quadrant. The contract value is 202700 dollars before GST, approved by council Monday evening. Bennett’s bid was not the lowest among seven bids. Stantec Consulting bid 176331 dollars and Riddell Kurczaba 206000 dollars. The Edmonton firm has prior firehall and ambulance facility work in Fort McMurray Grande Prairie and Greenview District and council approved borrowing 3 million dollars for the project to be built near the airport.
In Medicine Hat, Computer and Co. changes its name to Comco Technologies Group to reflect a broader tech focus. Jordan Lien, sales and marketing manager, says the inclusive name covers the various technology groups the company represents and its ongoing growth in new technologies. Comco offers computer and cell phone sales, tech support, web design and hosting, and networking services.
