A Brazilian jetliner crashed into a residential area in Sao Paulo shortly after takeoff, igniting a river of fire. 95 aboard were killed, with three more bodies recovered and the death toll expected to rise as firefighters comb the rubble. One American, Citibank official David Tobolla, was aboard.

Two armed men held up the Tavern on the Green restaurant near Central Park and forced a waitress to open the cash register. A doorman, a 20 year veteran, bid them farewell and hailed their taxi as patrons remained unaware during the Tuesday incident. Shelley Clark, a restaurant spokeswoman, said the eatery is popular with celebrities and tourists.
