Irvine area considers dissolution into municipal district

About 50 residents attended a town hall meeting to learn the merits of Irvine dissolving the town to become a hamlet within the Municipal District of Cypress. Councillor Stan Stehr and MD manager Lutz Perschon warned no special status or guaranteed tax stability. A study projects a 37 percent tax cut if Irvine joins the MD, though future assessments and grants may affect finances. Residents questioned library, town hall, museum, and service retainment. some favor lower taxes, others oppose dissolving.

Mortgage rates fall to new low in Canada

Canadian homeowners react as major banks cut mortgage rates by up to a quarter point effective today, with the one year term dropping to 5.35 percent. CIBC cites lower bond yields and notes the five year rate at 7.20 percent is the lowest since 1965, while monthly payments on a $100000 mortgage over 25 years drop from $747.33 to $601.69.

Calgary oil sector outlook stays buoyant into 2000

Richard Woodward of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers says the Western Canada oil and gas sector should remain vibrant through 2000 as commodity prices and production stay buoyant. He notes the current oil price surge to over $25 a barrel and analysts forecast $20 to $22 by year end.

Grizzly victim sues government over campground attack

Susan Olin a 39 year old Whitefish Montana woman and former Glacier National Park ranger sues the Canadian federal government in Calgary claiming park officials failed to warn campers about prior bear incidents before a violent Lake Louise campground attack on Sept 25 1995. The suit argues the bear posed a danger and the park should have closed or warned campers after earlier encounters. Four other tourists from Germany and Australia narrowly escaped when the bear ripped into tents.

Simpson case opens in Santa Monica civil trial

In Santa Monica California the O J Simpson civil case opens with Daniel Petrocelli calling it the last fight for justice for Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. He accuses Simpson of confronting the victims and stabbing them to death on June 12 1994. The defense cites the former football star’s refusal to testify while the judge bans cameras and microphones.
