A large Liberal convention yesterday debated selecting a candidate and holding a strong campaign. Speakers argued the party must uphold Liberal principles, fight to win, and balance government priorities with tariff policy and railway ownership concerns.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered western freight rates on grain and hay cut by about 76 percent with immediate effect and to be fully implemented by late October. Winnipeg Oct 22 A conference of deputy ministers of education from Manitoba Saskatchewan Alberta and British Columbia will meet in Regina to discuss a new series of school readers. They will prepare contracts with publishers for printing the books and submit them to the four provincial ministers for approval.
Toronto reports Chief Dickson has purchased three machine gun rifles for police squads. The weapons weigh eight pounds and can fire 1590 rounds per minute as they pursue bank robbers and car thieves.
Chicago Oct 21 The United States Railroad Labor Board summoned the nation’s railroads and five major union chiefs to appear next Wednesday and warned unions not to strike until a board decision is issued. The move delays a potential strike set for October 20 by asserting jurisdiction to prevent commerce disruption. Parties were urged to maintain the status quo after a conference begun at 1 o’clock. The board declined to reveal contacts with Washington.
The Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butchers completed a strike vote in the packing industry. President C. I. Mayes announced the results showing 35,354 votes for, and 2,190 against.
