After eight years of service to Medicine Hat School District No. 76, Ken Serr announces his resignation to prioritize family. Page A3 reports his departure details.
A Saskatchewan pickup crossed the centre line and struck a flour semitrailer about 50 kilometres northeast of Medicine Hat. Three men in the pickup died at the scene while a fourth was hospitalized in serious but stable condition. The semi driver had minor injuries. Names withheld pending kin notifications. The Saskatoon based semi and Saskatchewan registered pickup were involved. Investigators continue to review the crash.
The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal hears Crown and defense appeals in the Tracy Latimer murder case. Robert Latimer was convicted of second degree murder for killing 12 year old Tracy with exhaust fumes after claiming he acted to end her suffering. The case tests mercy killing rules and a constitutional exemption from a life sentence.
In Altona Manitoba the sunflower capital of Canada unveils an eight storey high replica of a Van Gogh painting. Artist Cameron Cross 34 created the piece by joining 24 plywood sheets and coating with ultraviolet protective finish. He painted with 17 gallons of acrylic enamel and mounted the work on a steel easel weighing 19 000 kilograms and nearly as tall as a grain elevator.
Former hockey coach Graham James seeks parole after his 1997 and 1971 convictions for sexual assaults. Sheldon Kennedy, who spoke out against James, may attend the hearing outside Winnipeg but cannot speak. The hearing, at Rockwood near Stony Mountain, is the third review since his initial 1997 hearings.
U S senator Orrin Hatch said the House will likely impeach President Clinton over the Lewinsky case but there is not enough Senate support to convict. Hatch noted no bipartisan consensus exists to remove Clinton, as conviction would require a two thirds Senate majority.
Medicine Hat and its police service receive a permanent coat of arms the first Alberta city and police service to do so. The seal features a gas mantle flames a river blue stripe and symbols of railway industry and ranching reflecting local history. The shield will adorn a badge for the police centennial in January and marks a historic civic symbol.
Witnesses said a burst pipeline sparked a fire in Warri Nigeria drawing hundreds of people to scoop petrol. Reported deaths run into the low hundreds with unconfirmed tallies over 400 hospitalized as officials call the event sabotage and rescue efforts continue.
