Washington October 2 William J Simmons imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan collapsed in a chair during an all day defense before a house committee. He was aided by friends and carried from the room as the session adjourned. Physicians said his condition was not serious.
In police court today Win Waite and John Lonergan were each fined 10.60 dollars and costs of ten days in jail for intoxication. Waite paid his fine while Lonergan received ten days imprisonment.
Redwood City Cal Oct 16 William A Hightower itinerant baker was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of Father Patrick E Festin Catholic priest and sentenced to imprisonment at San Quentin The jury recommended the term Hightower said he had no time to prepare a proper defense and again proclaimed innocence Motion for a new trial and arrest of judgment were overruled Notice of appeal was filed with the court.
Mrs Ellen Paine wife of Charles Paine of Iscoyne Mont committed suicide by fire early today. The coroner found she poured oil on her clothes and ignited the blaze while her husband slept. A search party led by her husband found the body about a mile from their home.
In Lethbridge Ovt three contenders emerge. W A Buchanan runs as Independent Liberal, Dr J O Lovering declares as Liberal, and M J Finn is nominated by Labor forces ending Farmer-Labor fusion talks. The Farmers plan nomination Thursday.
Port Arthur Ontario October 17 Canadian Press delegates gathered for the fifth annual convention of the Great War Veterans Association focusing on unification and federation among municipal bodies. Winnipeg hosts the first annual tubercular veterans convention addressing care for ten thousand sanatorium patients and fundraising to dispel myths about tuberculosis among veterans.
The announcement that Mr and Mrs Harold FL McCormick of Chicago have separated caused a sensation. McCormick is linked to the International Harvester Co and a Chicago Opera Company patron. Mrs McCormick, daughter of John D Rockefeller, leads Chicago society.
Windem Minnesota plans to burn corn at 95 cents a bushel for the municipal power plant this winter as farmers weigh fuels. In Des Moines Iowa officials say corn is not profitable to burn when 20 cents or more per bushel is obtainable, and Iowa farmers may sell grain instead of using it for fuel depending on weather and prices.
In New York a court reviews clemency for former President Theodore Roosevelt after a photograph and notes surface. The proceedings reference a Mrs. Mimi Durkett of Indiana and unknown details about prior charges or motives.
London reports a high level Sinn Fein and British government conference entering a critical stage as Ulster's status looms in talks. Figures from the Department of Immigration and Colonization show 58 413 immigrants arrived in Canada in the five months from April 1 to August 10. By origin, 29 443 came from Britain and dependencies, 17 234 from the United States, and 11 706 from other countries, totaling 48 410 for the period.
