Police report a 12 year old boy named Claude Fili on was struck and killed at the Wellington street Champlain bridge entrance. Several drivers ran over the body without stopping while three students eventually alerted police after the body lay in the road for about ten minutes. The boy’s father Maurice Fili on, a CNR engineer, questioned why others did not stop.

Vancouver police say Douglas Patrick Shaben 42 was seen picking up the ransom before losing his car in traffic. He faces two counts of kidnapping and two of unlawful confinement over the abduction of Phyllis Cohen and Katherine Matheson, ages 11. The girls were dropped unharmed at the Vancouver bus depot after their father paid the ransom. The investigation traced Shaben to the U.S. border and into Bellingham, Washington, where authorities pursued tips from a shotgun registration inquiry.
