An unidentified man touches the fin of a dead humpback whale that washed up on the Long Beach Peninsula near Klipson Beach Washington. The whale was first spotted the previous day.
Alberta court orders former Lacombe resident Ledd Zeppelinn to stay out of town for 12 months after pleading guilty to careless driving. Judge Monica Bast imposed a $1000 fine, suspended his licence for three months, and barred contact with two teen victims. Zeppelinn, 47, had pursued two teenagers who egged a sign he posted reading Welcome to Auschwitz after disputes over yard waste fines.
Colin George Winsor, 30, charged with killing 17 year old Ashton Moon in Brooks, is awaiting a preliminary inquiry date after a Wednesday court appearance. Moon disappeared June 20, her body found July 1 south of Brooks. Winsor formerly worked with Moon at Wal-Mart. Next court date October 25.
The Government of Alberta and Citytv extend the Stand Up and Stop Bullying video contest deadline to October 13 2006 at 5 p.m. Youth aged 13 to 18 are invited to submit a two minute video proposing positive solutions to bullying. Four finalists will have their videos posted on Citytv’s site for votes, with top two win 600 gift certificates and air on Citytv. Two secondary winners will also air and win 150. The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association convention backed a plan to let cities automatically annex developments encroaching on borders. Calgary cites four years of talks with Rocky View and a near accord for a 38 year land supply. Minister Renner and NDP leader Mason commented on the proposal.

Saskatchewan recorded its best September for employment with 499100 people employed, up 18899 from last September and 16300 above the 2004 record. Full time jobs rose by 23400 and youth employment increased by 7700, marking the sixth straight record month.
Ontario Superior Court Justice John McIsaac ordered the court file sealed to shield grieving family members from the public as Frances Elaine Campione faces two counts of first degree murder over the deaths of her two daughters Serena 3 and Sophia 1 in Barrie. The bodies were found as a custody dispute with her husband Leo Campione loomed in family court. The ruling aims to give the family time to grieve and bury the children.
The Associated Press reports the U S federal budget deficit for the just completed fiscal year dropped to 250 billion dollars. Congressional Budget Office estimates show a 10 billion drop from August projections and well below the White House July forecast of 296 billion. Improved tax receipts, led by corporate profits, drive the better deficit picture.
Google Inc is in talks to acquire YouTube Inc for about 1.6 billion dollars in cash and stock. Mountain View based Google and San Mateo YouTube are said to be at a sensitive stage with reports from The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
Japan said it will push for a punitive United Nations resolution if North Korea ignores a UN Security Council statement urging it to cancel plans for its first nuclear test. The council warned of consequences and North Korea was urged to return to talks on scrapping its nuclear program.
