Medicine Hat News reports a segment of the Seven Persons Trail from Industrial Avenue S.E. to South Railway Street S.E. will close to pedestrians and cyclists for about two weeks for flood restoration work on the creek bank. Rip rap and metal baskets will stabilize the bank as part of the 2005 program. A detour via South Railway Street S.E. Maple Avenue Bridge and Industrial Avenue S.E. is advised. completion targeted by Oct 15 if weather allows.
Calvin Gordon Egeland, 44, charged with attempted murder in an Aug. 16 Dunmore Avenue assault on James May, remains at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatric Centre. Court heard an extra two weeks are needed to finish a 30 day psychiatric assessment to determine criminal responsibility. Next appearance Oct. 19.
A Calgary cabbie, Asegde Bereket Abed, received an absolute discharge after writing a three page driver conduct manual and being found guilty of common assault for hugging a 21 year old female passenger. He had earlier been found not guilty of sexual assault. The judge said the hug was a lower end assault and unlikely to recur. Outside court Abed reiterated his innocence and said he spent months preparing the manual.
Akira Haraguchi, 60, recited pi to 100000 decimals in over 16 hours at a public hall in Kisarazu near Tokyo, beating his 1995 mark. He seeks a story in pi beyond memorization, noting pi’s infinite digits and role in equations describing the universe.
