CFIA orders mass slaughter of cattle in Medicine Hat region
About 10 000 head of cattle in the Medicine Hat region will be slaughtered by federal animal health inspectors. The CFIA says the animals likely came in contact with bovine tuberculosis during the grazing season. Tracing has identified 18 locations across Cypress and Newell Counties and southern Saskatchewan linked to the index herd. All cattle from the 18 premises will be destroyed and sent to a Lacombe abattoir for inspection. meat may enter the food supply if tests are negative. The trace-out covers about five years and roughly 40 quarantined ranches.
