Liberal plan pushes provinces to phase out coal by 2030

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna outlined a federal strategy to raise clean electricity to 90 percent by 2030, urging Alberta Saskatchewan New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to phase out coal or use carbon capture. Nova Scotia may extend coal use beyond 2030 with tailormade allowances while Halifax plans a cap and trade system for industry by 2018.

RN Emily Johnson honored with lifetime membership award

Medicine Hat nurse Emily Johnson RN diabetes educator with Alberta Health Services received the Canadian Diabetes Association honorary lifetime membership for three decades of work. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1986, she promotes informed choices, advocacy, and better access to diabetes supplies as part of her role in the Alberta healthy living program.

Canadian Diabetes Association Alerts On Diabetes Burden

The Canadian Diabetes Association reports a new diagnosis every three minutes in Canada. Type 1 diabetes insulin costs range from 2207 to 2436 dollars annually. Diabetes drives 30 percent of strokes and 40 percent of heart attacks and is a leading cause of blindness. It causes half of dialysis kidney failures and 70 percent of non traumatic amputations. About 30 percent have depressive symptoms and foot ulcers affect 15 to 20 percent of patients. In 2011 2012 a third of amputations involved a diabetic foot wound. Albertans in non metro zones show fewer specialist visits and heavier ED use for diabetes complications.

Medicine Hat police withhold autopsy results in third homicide

The Medicine Hat Police Service will not publicly release autopsy findings for the Nov 12 homicide of Brenda Woloski, 53, while witness interviews continue. The case progresses to the criminal court system as Noah Harrison Bentley, 26, faces second degree murder charges. The autopsy was conducted in Calgary. police say release depends on case specifics.
