Statistics Canada reports seasonally adjusted unemployment at 8.2 percent in October, with 798000 jobless. The rate before seasonal adjustment was 7.2 percent. Ontario and Quebec show notable improvements, Manitoba falls to 6.5 percent. Nova Scotia and British Columbia show increases.
Alberta's unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent in October from 5.1 percent in September, with employment rising to 920000 and the labor force at 959000. Jobless totals in other provinces and changes by age and sex groups are noted, including Newfoundland at 16.8 percent and Ontario with 259000 unemployed.
Israel demands U.S. aid for two Negev airfields to replace Sinai sites as part of a peace treaty with Egypt. Dayan says U.S. help and oilfield transfer terms must be settled before Israel approves the accord. Sadat seeks clear Palestinian talks and self rule pace within a month of signing.
Tehran AP reports former Iran national airline director Ali Mohammed Khademi, a retired air force general and Bahai, was critically wounded outside his Tehran suburb home. Islamic youths claimed responsibility as opposition to Shah Pahlavi’s government spreads.
Small groups near Tehran University were dispersed by troops and police firing in the air as rioting followed the installation of Iran's first military government in 25 years. One death and two wounded reported as banks and liquor stores burned near the campus. Demonstrations also in Abadan with Khomaini calling for non peaceful action but not ruling out armed violence.
Space Research Corp of Highwater Quebec denies shipping arms to South Africa and says a CBC Fifth Estate program alleging 155 mm shells reached South Africa is unproven. The firm notes a July shipment of 12 988 shell casings to Spain may have been used elsewhere, with RCMP reviewing the new allegations.
A 32 year old computer expert held on six million bail was arraigned in San Diego on charges of interstate transportation of stolen property in what officials call a major wire theft. FBI says he acted alone in stealing ten point two million dollars for a Russian diamond deal.
After the November fire that damaged Olds arena curling rink and exhibition hall the Disaster Committee chair says the blaze may spur long term gains. $3.6 million goal includes master recreation plans linking town facilities with Olds College. Donations and insurance expected to cover at least half. local groups and a developer contribute. A fire inquiry is set for November 26 with no fatalities.
