Prime Minister Trudeau and 10 provincial premiers argued over a broad reform package linking federal provincial power sharing to bringing home the British North America Act. Quebec's Rene Levesque rejected a packaged deal seeking immediate division of powers before constitutional amendments.
A major blaze in Olds Alberta destroyed three grain elevators and three recreational buildings after winds gusting to 90 kmh spread embers from an arena fire. Mayor Bill Edgar declared a local state of emergency as RCMP and firefighters from Calgary Red Deer and surrounding areas fought the fire. No injuries were reported and damage estimates were not set. the arena alone valued at about $12 million.
Medicine Hat public school board and teachers signed a two year wage contract taking effect January 1 1979 with a 7 percent raise in 1979 and another 7 percent in 1980. The district aims to hold its budget steady if provincial grants stay firm and notes the agreement is among the first two year contracts in Alberta.
Retired RCMP commissioner W L Higgitt identified six confidential documents on Tuesday to support his claim that former solicitors general knew Mounties could break the law in duty. The contents were shown to the McDonald royal commission but not released publicly, with publication decision still in closed sessions.
A 53 year old Medicine Hat man died Tuesday at Maple Leaf Mills on Kipling Street while operating an electric sander. An autopsy has been ordered and police say the cause of death is under investigation. The man’s name was not released.

The Progressive Conservatives lead the Liberals by five points in a Gallup poll, 42 percent to 37 percent, with 32 percent undecided. The survey taken Oct 4–7 shows PC gains of eight points since September while Liberals fall outside Quebec where they still hold strength.
Uganda announces it has occupied a salient of Tanzanian territory west of Lake Victoria with a border along the Kagera River, claiming 1 840 square kilometres. Reports say up to 3 000 Ugandan troops with tanks and artillery fight Tanzanian forces near Kyaka as missions evacuate foreigners and seek hostages.
