More than 90 per cent of southern Alberta farmers have finished planting as the 2005 Crop Report notes. Seeding is nearly complete in eastern areas with about 70 to 80 per cent in the southwest. some canola and sugar beets were reseeded after frost damage. Moisture levels are mixed with surface and sub surface reserves depleted due to low rainfall and strong winds. Overall Alberta producers have planted 86 per cent of the 2005 crop.
Labour Relations Board chair Mike Asbell issued decisions on the Catholic board and the Alberta Teachers' Association. The Catholic board was found to commit unfair labour practices by targeting strikes at inopportune times and misrepresenting 2003 04 budget discussions. A Nova Scotia woman was attacked by a beaver Monday morning while the animal lounged under a derelict car about 250 metres from water. The beaver, described as large with sharp incisors, bit the woman, bruising her and tearing a pant leg. She was hospitalized and showed no illness. Wildlife technician Peter MacIsaac warned rodents bite when cornered.
Tim Jones of the North Shore Search and Rescue led a broad effort after three experienced climbers on Mount Logan in Yukon were trapped in a severe storm. The group Alex Snigurowicz Erik Bjarnason and Don Jardine were part of an eight member team aiming to scale the 5500 meter peak for the unit’s 40th anniversary. Bjarnason and two companions are hospitalized in Anchorage.
A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the Indian Ocean southwest of Banda Aceh in Aceh province. No damage or injuries were reported initially though residents fled from a five story hotel and other buildings as the tremor lasted about 10 seconds.
