Two Soviet cosmonauts Leonid Kizim and Vladmir Solovev left the Salyut-7 orbital platform to work on a device described as a potential space station link. The walk followed their 1984 237 day endurance record and lasted about ten minutes of live Soviet TV coverage.

Harvard honors Lougheed with business school award

Former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed will receive Harvard Business School's highest service award alongside four others. The honor recognizes graduates who have achieved outstanding professional stature. Lougheed earned an MBA from Boston University in 1954.

Train derailment blocks CP Rail line near Medicine Hat

A CP Rail freight train derailed on the eastern edge of Medicine Hat injuring no one and blocking about 775 metres of mainline toward Swift Current. The front section continued into Medicine Hat while 30 cars behind remained upright to be removed. The cause was not determined though heat and a kinked rail were considered factors. Over 250 Via Rail passengers were delayed in Medicine Hat for three hours. Two Wheat Board cars spilled grain and pulled down a telephone wire without fires. Anhydrous ammonia cars posed no danger to the public.

Five Montreal men charged in Canada US bomb plot

Five Montreal area men of Indian origin were charged with conspiring to fabricate and use explosives. The charges linked to an alleged plot to blow up an Air India jetliner leaving New York, investigations led by RCMP with FBI CSIS and provincial police, eight arrest warrants issued. Firefighters Die In Quebec Forest Fire Evacuation

Three firefighters died when they and others were evacuated from a lakeshore by aircraft and they lost their grip on pontoons in Lake Froget. The victims were Ber trans Vandal Jocelyn Pomerleau and Jean Claude Fraser.

Tutu urges Canada to sanction South Africa

Bishop Desmond Tutu drew strong applause in Toronto as he urged Canada to impose economic and diplomatic sanctions on South Africa. He said a Commonwealth panel, led by Archbishop Edward Scott, will likely back sanctions, arguing the moral climate must force governments to act against apartheid.
