In Rome slogans taunting Juventus and celebrating the Brussels riot deaths appeared on walls amid outrage. Officials suspect Roma fans, amid claims the taunts target the Turin club whose supporters died in the European Cup final tragedy involving Liverpool supporters.
A pro jectionist at the east end Odeon Queensway Drive-In was stabbed to death after asking a car to lower its music. Joseph Edmond St Amand, 31, of Ottawa, died from abdominal stab wounds during the 10 p.m. confrontation. A man was arrested at a Ottawa home and charges expected.
Edward Allan Hansford was convicted of second degree murder in the capital cab driver Ken Spoonheim's killing and sentenced to life with parole eligibility after ten years. The defense plans an appeal asserting improper jury charging, with papers expected in early June.
Fans flood downtown Edmonton after the Oilers defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 8 3 to clinch the title. Crowds on Jasper Avenue celebrate with beer, drums, and cheers as police report few incidents and no arrests. Wayne Gretzky hoists the trophy amid a citywide celebration.
Liberal MP Robert Kaplan accuses Solicitor General Elmer MacKay of failing to defend the RCMP by not pressing New Brunswick Premier Richard Hatfield to drop his allegations. RCMP Commissioner Simmonds disputes Hatfield’s claims of misconduct, urging they be proved or withdrawn. In Commons, MacKay says he cannot force Hatfield or John Baxter to retract the accusations.
Belgium bars all English, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Ireland soccer teams from play until further notice following a Brussels riot that killed 38 people, mostly Italian fans. England's FA withdraws English clubs from European competition next season. Scottish Welsh and Northern Irish clubs stay. The ban is soccer specific.
