Police and volunteers arrested about 100 persons in a nine hour period amid looting and sniping during the fourth night of racial unrest in Louisville. Juveniles numbered about 20 and most detainees faced charges of disorderly conduct or breach of peace. A plea for calm came from Mrs. James Groves, mother of a teen killed in the violence.
Albert Murphy a 59 year old Laval father of two received the donor heart of 38 year old Gerard Rondeau after a massive cerebral hemorrhage. The operation at Montreal Heart Institute began around 12 30 a m and the heart was beating at a satisfying rhythm at 4 a m EDT. The surgical team led by Dr Pierre Grondin completed the transplant and Murphy weighed 124 pounds after the procedure. Mrs Murphy expressed happiness and fatigue as the family awaiting updates from the hospital.
Dr Grondin discusses the planned transplant as Mr Murphy and Mrs Rondeau undergo separate operations. Murphy has suffered three strokes since 1959 and is seen as the best and most in need candidate. Mrs Rondeau dies before the heart transfer. her kidneys are rushed to Royal Victoria Hospital for possible later transplant.
Senators Eugene J. McCarthy and Robert F. Kennedy will meet on a one hour ABC telecast Origins from KGO TV in San Francisco. The program titled Issues and Answers will feature Frank Reynolds as moderator with Kennedy and McCarthy facing questions with immediate rebuttals. Humphrey declined to join the debate. California voters in the upcoming primary will watch the exchange.
Maurice Sauve minister of lands and forests defeated for Montreal nomination by Arthur Portelance 179 to 146. Roger Teillet had earlier lost in St Boniface Manitoba while Joseph Guay won the St Boniface nomination on May 22. Marcel Ferbault to oppose Portelance in the general election.
