A Quebec premier and justice minister face criminal libel and slander charges after claims that Arthur Vachon, head of the Quebec Provincial Police Association, was a security risk and a Communist. The RCMP file reportedly cites Vachon’s nine years in the RCAF.
The Toronto Producers Association will not withdraw its strike threat against CBC though no walkout plans are in place. An emergency meeting ended early with spokesman Richard Nielsen saying it is not a time to strike, noting possible action in October or during an election. Arbitration is sought for the This Hour Has Seven Days hosts dismissal.
A Supreme Court judge launched a preliminary industrial inquiry into a coast forest industry contract dispute involving about 26 000 IWA members and major forest companies. Talks will be held under Commissioner Nemetz to avert a damaging strike while other labor clashes unfold in Vancouver and Victoria.
Alberta seeding operations are nearing completion with 98 percent of wheat planted nationwide as of May 28, led by 96 percent in the Calgary-Fort Macleod area. About 75 percent of coarse grains sown. rapeseed and flax progressing. rain needed in East-Central Alberta and Peace River District to finish by June 1.
The Public School Board approved padded seats for the team teaching theatre at Medicine Hat High School this fall after previous rejections. The padding was insisted to avoid sharp edges that could damage silk stockings and nylon hose.
Thousands of leftist demonstrators renewed protests in Yokosuka against the first visit to Tokyo Bay of a U.S. nuclear powered submarine. Police reported 13 000 while organizers claimed 30 000 participated. Earlier protests were aimed at the U S embassy in Tokyo.
Arthur Vachon president of the Quebec Provisional Police Association accuses Premier Lesage and Justice Minister Wagner of McCarthyism smear tactics as he discusses a RCMP file on him. Vachon 29 was dismissed from the QPP for breaches of police discipline after 14 months in the force and has led the association seeking recognition as bargaining agent despite a prohibition on strikes for essential services. The RCMP says no record brands him a security risk from his RCAF service.
Cape Kennedy prepares for Gemini 9 launch with Lt Col Thomas Stafford and Lt Cmdr Eugene Cernan aboard a Titan rocket to dock with an augmented target docking adapter in a planned 185 mile high orbit. Weather forecasts show favorable blastoff conditions. Nearby Pasadena reports Surveyor 1 adjusting course for a Moon landing, aiming for late Wednesday in the Sea of Storms.
Soviet Communist leader Leonid Brezhnev accused the United States of provocative actions in Cuba near Guantanamo and warned of serious consequences for aggressors. He pledged Soviet support for revolutionary Cuba and opposed a new military conflagration with imperialist powers, as Fidel Castro reported US troops firing on a Cuban guard at Guantanamo Bay.
The Alberta Public Utilities Board approved a minimum milk price increase of one to four cents per quart, effective Wednesday. Homogenized milk rises to 26 cents in Edmonton and 27 cents in Medicine Hat, Calgary at 26 12 cents, with standard milk up four cents to 26 cents in Edmonton and similar rises elsewhere. Buttermilk and chocolate dairy drinks also climb to 27 and 30 cents respectively.
Premier Walter R. Shaw and Liberal Leader Alex Campbell led in Prince Edward Island results with a Liberal edge of two seats but recounts and a July 11 riding vote due to a candidate's death threaten a clear outcome. Shaw, 78, seeks a third term while Campbell, 38, could become Canada’s youngest premier if Liberal gains continue.
