Almeria Bombarded by Nazi Warships Killing Civilians

British and French warships moved toward Spanish waters after a German assault on Almeria marked the first open foreign attack in the Spanish Civil War. Nineteen civilians were killed and many injured as one heavy German vessel and four destroyers attacked the port. The Spanish government reported extensive destruction and casualties.

Bank of Canada withholds comment on Alberta loan request

Ottawa reports Bank of Canada officials will not publicly discuss negotiations with customers. Premier Aberhart announced a loan request to the Central Bank, which is unlikely to be granted, with Alberta to rely on internal financing rather than federal aid. R P Gilchrist of Medicine Hat urged unified policy to protect land and stock as the Western Stock Growers Association wrapped up its 41st annual meeting at the Palliser Hotel. Wilbur Shaw of Indianapolis won the 500 mile race at Indianapolis in a record time before an estimated 170000 crowd. He finished about ten seconds ahead of Ralph Hepburn and posted a time of 4 24 70 81 with an average speed of 113 miles per hour.

Amelia Earhart tentatively plans to depart Tuesday on a west to east attempt circling the globe. If weather permits she will fly from Miami to San Juan Puerto Rico using the same aircraft that previously crashed at Honolulu to conclude her globe girdling journey begun in California.

Premier Aberhart backs Social Credit conventions in Edmonton

Alberta Social Credit League constituency associations vote to support government efforts to establish Social Credit. Premier Aberhart, speaking to about 1100 at the Edmonton Prophetic Bible Conference, says no convention has voted against the government. He did not reveal how many ridings sided with him by June 1. He warned against church and state dissension and criticized baseless criticism.
