Hyperion claimed the 53rd Derby at Epsom Downs before about 250000 spectators including the King and Queen. Lord Derby’s winner beat King Salmon by four lengths with Statesman a further length back. Ridden by Tommy Westen, Hyperion set a new Derby record time surpassing 1927’s Call Boy by several seconds.
