An elder told provincial court nine men from two Hussar area colonies are shunned as RCMP file 34 sex related charges this month. The shunning, described as a three month period of segregation and counselling, varies by seriousness and acknowledgement of guilt.
Newly released documents reveal a 1942 Canadian plan to destroy Newfoundland defenses and key installations with sledgehammers dynamite and fire before a potential Nazi invasion. Six eastern cities plus West Coast airports were listed. Newfoundland plans remain, and about 200 pages are in The Archivist July issue.
The Palliser Health Authority approves a million dollar reserve to help the Medicine Hat Health Foundation buy 181 hospital beds. Some members oppose foundations funding bed purchases calling it a health authority duty while others defend the plan as a high priority and acceptable fundraising role.
The Supreme Court of Canada rules the 72 hour pre election poll blackout unconstitutional as a serious invasion of freedom of expression. The ruling, 5 to 3, targets the Elections Act ban challenged by Southam Inc and Thomson Newspapers Ltd and criticizes the federal government for assuming voters are uninformed.
Medicine Hat MLA Lorne Taylor urges abolition of the Senate citing Allan McEachen and Andrew Thompson controversies as proof of systemic abuse. He opposes elections and proposes either abolition or elected terms, while Premier Klein hints at senator housing to monitor Alberta interests. Joyce Fairbairn supports elected or shorter terms amid ongoing constitutional debate.
Barrie Ontario sisters Lisa Morton and Kelly Parker welcomed healthy daughters within twenty minutes of each other on Wednesday in the same hospital. Parker said they did not plan the timing while recovering in adjoining rooms.
