Patrol Plane Crash Kills Six Aboard US Fleet Maneuvers

Six naval aviators die when their patrol plane G H 7 crashes during mid Pacific maneuvers aboard the Pennsylvania. Victims include LieutHarry A Brandonbureer executive officer of the flight squadron. This brings total fatalities from the exercises to eight with three aircraft lost and four destroyers damaged.

Royal Air Force Launches Massive Recruitment Drive

London May 23 The government unveiled a vast program to triple the first line home strength of the Royal Air Force within two years. The appeal foresees about 2,500 pilots and 20,000 skilled and unskilled workers, with half the total required by next April. Recruits from the Dominions and colonies will be welcomed.

Huge British Parliament backs advanced air armament plan

London May 23 British Prime Minister Baldwin and Lord Londonderry unveiled a plan to triple domestic RAF first line aircraft within two years and reach 1500 fighters by March 1937. The motion, opposed by Labour, passed 340 to 4 as government insisted on rapid expansion to parity with Germany and France.

Railwaymen Seek Clarifications On 8-Hour Day Bill

Ottawa May 23 contending parties prepare to iron out eight hour day provisions next Tuesday and Wednesday before the senate banking and commerce committee. Rail, lumber, coal and tramway interests in Ontario Quebec and the Maritime provinces will be invited to air views on the bill and its exemptions for railway workers and related trades as amendments evolve.

Bow Island Music Festival Draws Wide Rural Entries

Bow Island hosted a Thursday music festival with entries from Burdett Brownsdale Lansdell Fettie Sunnymead Haycroft Chamberlain and local students. Mr Cook judged the music and 100 judges evaluated recitations and dramas. Competitions ended around 10:30 p.m. and the winning concert was cancelled.

Buchan Named Knight Grand Cross in St Michael and St George Honours

London May 24 John Buchan eminent author and parliamentarian will be Canada’s next governor general. Majesty approves his appointment as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. He has already been raised to the peerage and is expected to choose the title Baron Buchan of Tweedsmuir in recognition of his Scottish ties.

Summer resorts isolated by new strike

Vancouver May 23 The Union Steamships Co fleet was tied up as stewards deckhands and freight handlers walked out. The Sea Farers Industrial Union seeks restoration of the 1929 wage scale and the Coastwise Freight Handlers Union demands 100 percent union employment on bagy docks. The strike cuts services to popular summer resorts and families in camps will be practically isolated.

Explosion Triggers $80,000 Fire at Saskatoon Plant

An $80,000 blaze erupted after an explosion at the Lemery Denison electric plant in Saskatoon. No injuries reported as firefighters contained the flames.
