Six naval aviators die when their patrol plane G H 7 crashes during mid Pacific maneuvers aboard the Pennsylvania. Victims include LieutHarry A Brandonbureer executive officer of the flight squadron. This brings total fatalities from the exercises to eight with three aircraft lost and four destroyers damaged.
London May 23 The government unveiled a vast program to triple the first line home strength of the Royal Air Force within two years. The appeal foresees about 2,500 pilots and 20,000 skilled and unskilled workers, with half the total required by next April. Recruits from the Dominions and colonies will be welcomed.
London May 23 British Prime Minister Baldwin and Lord Londonderry unveiled a plan to triple domestic RAF first line aircraft within two years and reach 1500 fighters by March 1937. The motion, opposed by Labour, passed 340 to 4 as government insisted on rapid expansion to parity with Germany and France.
Ottawa May 23 contending parties prepare to iron out eight hour day provisions next Tuesday and Wednesday before the senate banking and commerce committee. Rail, lumber, coal and tramway interests in Ontario Quebec and the Maritime provinces will be invited to air views on the bill and its exemptions for railway workers and related trades as amendments evolve.
EDMONTON May 25 Delegates from Kirn Alberta and others at a Conservative convention united to back cooperation with groups opposing Social Credit in the provincial election. M. L. A. D. M. Duggan praised the motion urging nonpartisan effort to defeat Social Credit policies.
Washington May 23 The United States Senate refused to pass the Patman inflationary bonus bill over President Roosevelt's veto.
Ottawa May 23 The House of Commons heard an amendment to the Criminal Code by Justice Minister Hugh Guthrie to abolish suspended sentences for driving while intoxicated. The measure would prevent magistrates from suspending such penalties, making a mandatory approach likely.
London May 23 An authoritative source said the International Wheat Conference agreed to a one year extension of the wheat pact expiring August 1 but with all operative clauses held in abeyance The international wheat advisory commission would continue as the contact point for governments if world conditions deteriorate
The Medicine Hat Kennel Club hosted its annual spring bench show with ideal weather and strong turnout despite a morning shower. Judge Bill Forrest of Calgary praised the quality of dogs, with trophies awarded to J. Goff, D. Verwoerd, and others as local officials organized stands and benches for spectators.

Bow Island hosted a Thursday music festival with entries from Burdett Brownsdale Lansdell Fettie Sunnymead Haycroft Chamberlain and local students. Mr Cook judged the music and 100 judges evaluated recitations and dramas. Competitions ended around 10:30 p.m. and the winning concert was cancelled.
At a Calgary nominating convention in the Al Azhar temple J. J. Bowlen Richard W. Watson Lt Col G W Harold Millican and R H Weir were chosen to contest Calgary seats for the Liberal party. W Harry Ross M L A was not elected as the convention limited tickets to four candidates.
London May 24 John Buchan eminent author and parliamentarian will be Canada’s next governor general. Majesty approves his appointment as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. He has already been raised to the peerage and is expected to choose the title Baron Buchan of Tweedsmuir in recognition of his Scottish ties.
Vancouver May 23 The Union Steamships Co fleet was tied up as stewards deckhands and freight handlers walked out. The Sea Farers Industrial Union seeks restoration of the 1929 wage scale and the Coastwise Freight Handlers Union demands 100 percent union employment on bagy docks. The strike cuts services to popular summer resorts and families in camps will be practically isolated.
An $80,000 blaze erupted after an explosion at the Lemery Denison electric plant in Saskatoon. No injuries reported as firefighters contained the flames.
