Ottawa dispatch reports MPs face a free vote on a capital punishment bill. If passed, it would move to committee to allow amendments before a third reading. The same period previously imposed a five year ban ending Dec. 29, with potential renewed penalties for murder.
London Britain’s Heath government received a relief statement after police found no evidence tying ministers to the call-girl vice scandal. The Downing Street note denied involvement by two unnamed ministers and said no proof supported the allegations. Police may interview Norma and Morris Levy over related criminal offences as sources note their Morocco trip and unknown whereabouts.
Ottawa minister Herb Gray announced the five member food prices review board with Beryl Plumptre as chair. The independent panel, empowered to inquire and publish findings, will monitor price trends quarterly and may investigate factors from agriculture to packaging. The board cannot force price cuts.
Premier Peter Lougheed said Alberta is studying ways to lower gasoline costs, including a possible removal of the 15 cent per gallon fuel tax. He noted plans are being explored during a cabinet tour and compared with the two price rebate system for natural gas. If tax relief is chosen, it could be funded by higher oil royalties, with revenue projections around 117 million annually.
External Affairs Minister Mitchell Sharp told the Commons Canada will end its 290 member peace monitor force in Vietnam within 60 days, keeping ICCS members Indonesia Hungary and Poland through July 31 if no replacement is ready. He cited ongoing fighting, ICCS disputes, and lack of acceptance of the Canadian concept as reasons for withdrawal, adding the move should not affect peace prospects.
Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Princess Anne to Lieut Mark Phillips of the Queen's Dragoon Guards. The couple have been companions since last December after prior denials from both. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh expressed great pleasure in confirming the betrothal.
